Hygeinisation of sewage sludge by the application Radiation technology of Bhabha Atomic research Centre (BARC) Government of India for the conversation of liquid waste to organic manure and value added bio fertilizer for the maintenance Ecological sustainability and environmental integrity.
Our country generates around 4,400 Million cubic meters of liquid waste annually that can be transformed into a value added products from the waste.
Urban areas with a population about Rs. 5 Lakhs generate 48 Million liters of sewage per day leading to the production of 376 cubic meters of sludge per day that amounts to 131600 cubic meters of wet thickened sludge or 5264 ton of dry sludge annually.
BARC has developed an excellent technology to recycle the liquid waste by the application of high energy Radiation that totally removes all the potential pathogens similar to that of production of radiation sterilized medical product,  a well established procedure all over the world including India this process is very effective to produce microbial free excellent organic manual besides upgraded to value added bio fertilizers. Therefore irradiated sewage sludge as a tertiary treatment has been thoroughly investigated all over the world that provides a valuable recycling route for the maintenance of ecological sustainability and environmental integrity.
THE Main advantages of this technology are as follows:

  • Easily integrated to sewage collection and treatment facilities which are at presently available.
  • It is the most reliable way to remove 99.9% of pathogenic bacteria which otherwise are responsible for the prevalence of infectious disease like cholera, typhoid, dysentery etc.,
  • It is an excellent organic manual that modifies the soil structure and quality of soil.
  • The product is free from odour (smell).
  • Crop productivity is accelerated by 20%.
  • Operation mode is simple and highly reliable.
  • Treated sludge can be converted to bio fertilizers by the addition of microflora ike rhizobium cultures.
  • Over comes the present remediation systems of STP that leads to accumulation of sludge in high quantities that require enormous areas of additional agricultural land in the urban neighborhood.
